Zolpidem: Properties and Side Effects
Zolpidem, also known as Ambien and Stilnox, is a drug that occasionally occurs and is used for sleep disorders such as insomnia. It is a fast acting, non-bezodiazepine-derived sedative and is preferred for people who have difficulty falling asleep or who wake up very often during the night.
Perhaps most of our readers are familiar with this drug because Zolpidem is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for short-term sleep disorders. The short term term here is that the use of medication is usually limited to one or two days and the maximum is one month, otherwise withdrawal symptoms occur.
The United States Air Force provides its pilots with this medication to sleep after their dismissal. These drugs are effective, fast, and unlike diabetodiazepine-derived drugs, drugs that you don’t experience drug-induced fatigue the next day.
However, the absence of a bezodiazepine and the absence of muscle relaxant effects does not mean that zolpidem is a completely harmless drug. Zolpidem-derived drugs are highly addictive in long-term use.
Zolpidem: What is it used for?
As mentioned earlier, doctors use this medicine to treat short-term sleep disorders. Gamma affects the aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors and act by a mechanism similar to benzodiazepine-derived drugs. The difference is at the molecular level, the two drugs are composed of different chemical compounds. Zolpidem also has no effect on the medulla.
Interestingly, this drug changes the sleep cycle (including REM and non-REM phases) less than other drugs.
Doctors also prescribe this medicine for restless legs syndrome. It is also a very effective drug for older people.
Zolpidem belongs to the drug group called Z group. Other examples of this group are zoplicone and zaleplond which are similar to benzodiazepines and are used in the treatment of sleep disorder.
How to use Zolpidem?
As with other drugs, zolpidem should be taken with a doctor’s prescription. The time it takes to take this medicine and use it depends entirely on your doctor’s decision. You should not use this medicine for more than a month, although it may help to improve your sleep quality.
It is a fast-acting drug, meaning that you should be ready to sleep for 7-8 hours. As you can imagine, you should avoid activities that require high attention, such as driving a car during the time you use it. If you wake up after only 2-3 hours after taking the drug, it is normal to see a marked decrease in performance in your body coordination, attention, memory.
Drugs called Z drugs are effective, and zolpidem is the most commonly prescribed drug. However, it should be kept in mind that if taken frequently, it will have an addictive effect. Tolerance is high, it breaks down rapidly in the liver and can also have negative effects if it interacts with other substances and drugs you use because it has soothing effect.
